Katarzyna Koczyńska - Kielan

Born in 1963 in Wroclaw. Studied at the Faculty of Ceramics and Glass in the Glass Department of the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wrocław. MFA Diploma in Artistic Ceramics Design in the studio of prof. Krystyna Cybińska and Functional Ceramics Design in the studio of prof. Halina Olech in 1987. From that year she was employed as an assistant lecturer in prof. Krystyna Cybińska’s Studio of Ceramics I in the Wrocław institution.

In years 1989 – 1993 she attended for a couple of times the artistic and scientific workshops in the pottery studio „ Margarethenhohe ‘’ in Essen (West Germany), run by an Korean artist Young – Jae Lee. The result of the participation was learning the wheel-throwing technique, a skill that had not been included in the artistic education in Poland for many years.
In 1993 she opened the Potter’s Wheel Studio in the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wrocław. She introduced an original programme of potter’s techniques instruction.

Since 1995 has been employed as a lecturer.
In years 1996 – 2001 was the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Ceramic and Glass (two terms).

Since 2005 has been the Head of the Ceramic Department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław (former State Higher School of Fine Arts)
In 2006 her habilitation thesis in the discipline of applied arts got a positive evaluation.
She has received the Rector's Award siks times.

Participated in many exhibitions and presentations of the artistic environments of Wrocław and the Academy in Wrocław in Poland and abroad, among others in Warszawa, Poznań, Kraków, Kłodzko, Brussels, Reims, Wiesbaden, Braunschweig, Halle, Koln, Munchen, Dresden. Took part in international ceramic plein air workshops in Poland and Germany (1990, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2007).

For me, my works are a story about time and passing, about the strength and fragility of matter.
Potter's wheel enables me to emphasize the 'happening' expressing it through rotary motion, rhythm, through disappearance and building up of structures.
